Dyeing

I've been doing the challenges at http://www.3creativestudios.com/  This month it is Shibori. This one was stitched first. It had the red areas on it to begin with and lots of white background.

Folding and dipping created this pattern-my least favorite way.

This one I twisted until it turned back on itself, then put dye on it.

Lastly, the fabric was wrapped around a PVC pipe and scrunched together before dyeing.

I like the effect of Shibori and will be doing more of it.

Technique of the Month

This month the technique from http://www.3creativestudios.com/  is screen printing. A friend has a Thermofax, so I made this screen from a Dover Art Deco design.

The background fabric is a pink hand dye which was first screened with violet.
The next image was using blue. I like the contrast better.
Each month names are drawn from those submitting an example of the technique. Last month I won one of the prizes-a card from Shelagh Folgate  http://shelaghfolgate.blogspot.com/  It is a blank card with an envelope to send to someone but is much too nice for that. I'll frame it and keep it. She also sent a postcard of her work-all of it tied up in tissue with this ribbon that looks like she either drew or stamped on it-must try that and also use the tissue.

Book, Technique of the Month

This is the first book I made last week. The cover is aluminum foil that is crumpled and painted. I didn't know there was such a thing as stick on frames to use around an image, but the teacher brought them for us to use. I added butterfly charms by wiring them on. The only one that really shows in the photo is the one that is upside down! The spine shows the signatures and is done over a cord. We spray painted the signature covers through stencils.
Painting foil really makes a nice surface.

http://www.threecreativestudios.com/ posts a technique of the month. Machine Embroidery is the latest one. I did some cutwork circles for this little sample.

Take A Stitch Tuesday, Technique of the Month

This week's stitch from Sharonb at http://www.pintangle.com/ is the Fancy Hem Stitch. The top line is the original way to do it. I made a grid by expanding the distance between the rows and filling the centers with a French Knot. The threads were Perle Cotton, floss(fuchsia), and Ostara.
The Technique of the Month from http://www.threecreativestudios.com/ is transferring onto fabric. I had this piece in progress. It's the negative of a flower in front of our house. First, I machine stitched on it, then hand stitched using French Knots in the center.

The group doing the postcards from the last post is http://groups.yahoo.com/group/unlimited-textiles/  It's a Yahoo group that started in Europe. I'm hoping mine gets to England. The poor people stuck in airports. At least now some are getting to fly home.

TAST, Technique of the Month

This week Sharonb at http://www.pintangle.com/ introduced us to the Portuguese Border Stitch. It's worked on a foundation row of straight stitches and goes wherever you take those stitches. First I worked it traditionally, then curved it and used different colors for the two sides. Next I tried it in a circle to create a flower shape. Then I did just one half of the stitching reversing sides in the middle. I like the curved one best. The technique of the month is painted lace at http://www.threecreativestudios.com/ It's bonded to Tintex to create a piece stiff enough for a cuff which I'm now working on. I used Dynaflow paints and like the effect. I was ambitious and have lots of it left to make a book.
