Quilt, Postcard

I won a postcard from Deb Levy for the Technique of the Month at www.3creativestudios.com She does the quilting before painting the piece. Isn't it wonderful?

I found more leftover blocks/scraps from a very early Nancy Crow workshop and put them together to make this quilt. It's about 15" by 30". The machine quilting just needed to go lengthwise.

Here's another quilt using the block I've been playing with. It was supposed to be offcenter but refused to be that way.

For May in the postcard exchange at the Yahoo group Unlimited Textiles, this came from Jill. She was sending a litlle sunshine-very needed this year in the NW! Spring feels more like winter. The poor garden is not happy.

Unlimited Textiles is exchanging postcards again. This is the one I'm sending out. It's done on a wool background with Misty Fuse used to hold silk flowers, fleece, and fabric scraps to it then covered with tulle.

Momma Robin has really been busy keeping her eggs warm.  We have tried to stay away from the back door as much as possible. She wasn't happy about having her photo taken, flew away but then came right back as soon as I left. While she was gone, it was too much of a temptation to photograph the eggs.

http://www.threecreativestudios.com/ has a Technique of the month that they give directions to and then draw for a prize from the people who submit photos of something they have done with that technique. I found this lovely postcard from Vicki for the painted fabric technique. It has fuzzy places, smooth ones and is fun to touch. Thank you Vicki. Not only that, but I've salvaged some ugly fabric by painting over it and creating something usuable.

This month's technique was painted lace that is fused to Tintex. I made a cuff and decorated it with antique buttons. Beads always appear on my work, but I didn't want them to detract from the buttons, so they just echo the path the buttons take.

Look what came in the mail yesterday. My friend, Judy, knows how much I love dogs. Isn't it great?

People asked which version of the Wonky I became a quilt top. This was the last one I showed-some order(necessary for me) and some variety.

Here's the second postcard I made with the painted batting for the Technique of the Month at http://www.threecreativestudios.com/  The foil is a peel and stick and is silver holigraphic. It does strange things when it is scanned.  I'll be doing one of the demos at our Guild meeting in March and am practicing my Shisha embroidery-my specialty.

In a box of samples I found this needlelace piece that I had done years ago. I've decided to do a wall hanging to feature it. There is no point in not using it-not sure what I was saving it for. It's a fun technique if somewhat labor intensive. You draw a design on brown paper then baste heavy thread to the main lines of the design. The needlelace is done next, finishing with buttonhole stitch over the heavy thread to cover all the starts and stops and create a nice edge. The piece is 4 by 5 inches.

I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday. We spent most of Christmas on the phone with far flung family.

This is a small quilt I just finished. It is a design that is a variation on one I did years ago. The center is hand stitched in back stitch and seed stitch. Block of the Month, Postcard

The http://calendargirls2008.blogspot.com exchange from Neki came, and she included this beautiful, silky handwoven piece she's done. The card has lots of dimension in the circle and is so much fun. I decided to do the Block of the Month that Terri Stegmiller posts at www.twocreativestudios.com Here is September--done in October.Here is October actually finished the last day of October.

Traditional is a real stretch for me, but I though these plus this month's might make a good table runner for a Christmas gift.

Class, Postcard

In the class I'm taking from Susan Sorrell at http://www.joggles.com/, one of the inspiration sources was fungi. Several years ago I took a photo of some mushrooms on the road. In Microsoft Picture It, I used the negative function to get my colors-blues and violets. I printed it on treated fabric which is the above photo. This is the stitched version. The piece had sat in the studio for several years, because I didn't know what to do with it. Now I'm happy.

My postcard for the exchange with Calendar Girls 2008 came yesterday from Doreen http://doreeng.blogspot.com It is so rich. I'm so happy with it. She did a great job interpreting the calendar photo.

The theme this month for Unlimited Textiles was Latin American flavor. This was done on the Embellisher with a knit piece cut up-the dark piece-and other fibers. It is machined with metallic threads and bordered with hand stitching in metallic. I used running stitch on two sides and chain stitch on the other two. Here is November's postcard for the Calendar Girls exchange. http://calendargirls2008.blogspot.com The vase and leaves are Ultrasuede, the stems hand stitched, and I had these cool flower beads to use to make the flowers.

Look what came in the mail from Jenny http://feltedfibers45.blogspot.com/ for this month's exchange for Calendar Girls. Wasn't she creative? It wonderful in person.

Here is my quiltie for the Unlimited Textiles exchange for October. The theme is Autumn or Halloween. It's done in felted wool with hand stitching and beading. Below is my postcard for this month's exchange of Calendar Girls. The appliques are Ultrasuede. It is hand stitched and beaded.
Lastly, the photo of the strange thing that I posted last week is the stone that was removed from my dog. It is silicate rather than the more usual calcium stone. In person it was much prettier with the red center showing more. It was very lightweight and chalky feeling.

Recently, I traded postcard with Linda http://www.linda-stokes.blogspot.com/ This is the lovely one I received. It is so much fun to "meet" artists from around the world and have some of their art.

One time that I visited Houston, my son took me to a wonderful fabric store where I purchased African fabrics. From the red and gold one, I cut a number of blocks which have sat around for years. One day I realized that I could use just some of the pieces to make a small hanging. The solid red has Sashiko type quilting; the solid black has machine quilting with a metallic black thread. I was going to add beads to it but decided that the simplicity was its strong point.

Here is the July Quiltie for the Yahoo group I'm in that is called Unlimited Textiles. The theme this month is Slash and Burn. Nothing is burned on this one. Every time I try the technique, I don't like what I did--not to mention the fumes even working outside. Since taking Sharonb's Studio Journal class at http://www.joggles.com/ , I seem to be working in snowflakes. I folded the wool and slashed into it to make the design. Behind the holes I put lame and quilted with copper metallic.

These is the postcard for July for the Calendar Girls http://calendargirls2008.blogspot.com The background is dyed fabric with hand painted lace over it which is hand beaded. The silk flowers are held down with tiny buttons.

This is the postcard for June for Calendar Girls-see side button-that goes to Dianne. It is on dyed cotton with hand painted lace over it. The petals are Ultrasuede with hand stitching and a beaded center.

For the Unlimited Textile group, the theme this month is Landscape. Here is my interpretation using the embellisher and some hand stitching.

Here is the March Postcard for Calendar Girls. It is painted fusible web with silk flowers over it. Then I put a sheer on top. Finally, the flowers were beaded and the edge hand stitched. Friends is ink on card stock machine to the card.
This is the Quiltie for Unlimited Textiles. The theme this month is Egypt. The red is reverse applique for the larger parts; the rest satin stitched. The fabrics are batiks.
