Fiberactions

 This is the last Fiberactions challenge. We were to use colors that were present in our closet. Of course Blogger put it on it's side.

 Here's a detail, but the color is purple like it shows in the photo of the complete hanging. The blocks is one of my experiments.

Fiberactions

The theme this time was Nature's colors. This is not the first one I started, but when I saw the sun, I knew it was the one I would do. The fabrics are denim and upholstery samples and machine quilted. Blue will always be a color I think of when I think of nature: water, sky, bluebirds. bluebells.

The details show my version of the sun. It is made with molding paste through a stencil and was sitting around the studio for ages. The electric blue is made entirely of hand stitched French Knots. The background is a strip pieced samples I had and painted over, because I didn't like the colors.

Fiberactions

Here is the Discharge fabric piece I did for the Fiberactions challenge-link at right. It's a piece I discharge outside with bleach when two friends and I got together to see what we could do with discharge. Can you imagine the sight when the UPS man came and saw three old ladies bouncing around the yard with fabric on the ground and wearing aprons, gloves, and masks and carrying bleach? We do have fun.

Here's the detail showing the quilting by couching metallic cord down. The beading is on the vertical rows.

Fiberactions Quilt

The scheme is split complementary this time-one of my favorites. I don't know why the colors in the detail look so grayed, but the large photo shows them much better except for the lime. Even trying to manipulate them doesn't help, and I'd rather create than spend forever on the computer.

The background is free cut for the piecing and is hand dyed cotton. The lime circles are leftover from the last challenge. I'm still interested in using circles but wanted a change and used the construction fencing openings as a template. The shapes are fused to the background and hand stitched using a running stitch and Perle Cotton. It's machine quilted.

Quilt

The Fiberaction reveal was yesterday. See the button on the right to check out the other pieces.  The word this time was Texture.

I had fused painted lace to a piece of cotton and then layered it with a green hand dyed cotton.  Slashing and rejoining created the wonky checkerboard. The sequins that decorate the green areas are hand sewn down with a spiderweb stitch that is just the base part of the stitch. It looked too blank, so I stitched around each by hand using the chain stitch. 

 I have  found that the big sequins work well for doing Shisha type stitching, because they are lighter in weight than mirrors and come in lots of colors. Also, if you want to change the size or shape, you can cut them with a scissors.-not your good sewing ones please.

Here is a detail. It's been great fun being in this group and trying to come up with pieces to fit a word/idea.

Quilt

The word at Fiberactions this time was Impression. Check out the others by clicking on the sidebar button. Mine turned into an Impressionist Landscape-an art style I really like.The center is felted with the Embellisher machine using wool rovings then applied to a curved pieced background of cotton. Then I machine quilted across the whole piece.

I enjoyed making this and have two more started using felting and pieced areas.

Fiberactions

This time the theme has been Transformation, So I took one of those lovely napkins and used it for the appliques. The greens in the top are silks scraps my German Sister-in-law gave me. The background are my hand dyes.

This detail is mounted on Timtex, so it stands above the surface. I used a gold pen to ink the white edges then had to add some details with it on the front when the pen decided to jump and color part of it while I was doing the edge. Part of creating is trying to cover those errors.

Fiberactions

This time the challenge word was Memory for the online art group Fiberactions. It made me think of the photo I had of my mother and her parents. They sure did glamour photos then! I transferred it to pretreated fabric, then strip pieced a frame around it. The laces are all old and the buttons Mother of Pearl. The fabrics are Oriental silk samples and decorator fabrics.

Thanks to everyone who commented on the last blogs. I always appreciate the comments but right now can't remember who I responded to-back from the trip and not caught up. It's exciting but tiring to play with a 3 and a 10 yr. olds. We sewed a pillow, ran the dogs, and shot arrows-must be like riding a bike-I could still hit the target.

Fiberactions

This time the challenge word was communications. There is very little direct communication anymore. Most involves a device that has a circuit board, so here is my circuits. The photos were taken by my husband of a board he built for his train set. I transferred them to fabric and fused them to a background.To cover the edges I used antique ribbon to recall the time when we actually talked face to face. Ultrasuede shapes convey the idea to and and nan gates-used in designing circuits. Hanging from below the photos are parts from a circuit board.
